relationship breakthroughs

i haven’t written much about jake but it’s crazy how much our relationship has changed (for the better) since i moved here. leaving my job and family and friends in DC was not an easy decision but i really wanted to give us one last shot and i’m so happy i did. for the first time in the almost 9 years we have been (on and off) dating, we are actually in an adult relationship where there are date nights and morning breath and fighting over the remote and spooning and grocery shopping and cover stealing and snoring and so much other real life shit that i (not-so) secretly love. we have our differences in schedules (he works, i don’t), in food likes (he’s a meat head, i’m recently vegetarian) and in religious views (he’s practically atheist, i’m a non-practicing catholic) and i’m sure there are more but we are learning to compromise in the little things and big things. we’ve matured a lot in the last few years and despite our strong personalities (he’s a complete alpha male, i’m a leo/stubborn brat - winning combo right there), we actually listen and are considerate of each other now .. most of the time. for example, jake is, was, and probably always will be, a workaholic. i can’t hate on his amazing work ethic and i mean, someone’s gotta pay the bills, right? (i’m only half joking) he almost always brings work home during the week and will usually go in at least once on the weekend. this would not/did not sit well with the “old me” a.k.a. needy, insecure, selfish me but the “new me” understands that my man is working hard, making money (for a ring? what? maybe?), doing what he loves and at the end of a long day, he is so excited and thankful to come home to a warm meal .. and his perfect girlfriend who waits for him no matter how loud her tummy is rumbling because he insists on eating together at the dinner table*. he usually brings home flowers, ice cream or cupcakes so it’s all good.

*last night was an exception because the bachelor AND the ohio state v. michigan basketball game were on. jake totally jinxed poor sara by the way.
